The Beauty of Pollination - Moving Artâ„¢
by Louie Schwartzberg
by Louie Schwartzberg
This video was shown at the TED conference in 2011, with scenes from
"Wings of Life", a film about the threat to essential pollinators that
produce over a third of the food we eat. The seductive love dance
between flowers and pollinators sustains the fabric of life and is the
mystical keystone event where the animal and plant worlds intersect that
make the world go round.
The Importance of Pollination
The Simple Truth: We Can't Live Without Pollination
Pollination is not just fascinating, it is an essential ecological function. Without pollination, the human race and all of Earth's ecosystems WILL NOT survive. Neither plant nor pollinator can exist in isolation. If one disappears, the other may be only one generation from extinction.

- One-third of our diet depends on honey bee pollination.
- Over 80% of the world's flowering plants require pollination by a pollinator in order to reproduce.
- Worldwide, roughly 1,000 plants grown for food, beverages, fibers, spices, and medicines need to be pollinated by animals in order to produce the goods on which we depend.
- Foods and beverages produced with the help of
pollinators include: apples, blueberries, chocolate, coffee,
melons, peaches, potatoes, pumpkins, vanilla, almonds, tequila, etc.
- In the United States, pollination by honey bees, native bees, and other insects produces $40 billion worth of products annually.
